Good Food Guidelines

These guidelines have been adapted from Real Food Challenge, an organization dedicated to empowering students to create a healthy, fair and green food system.

Geography

  • Production, processing, and distribution sites should be based regionally in either IA, IL, IN, MI, MN, and/or WI
  • For products that cannot be reasonably sourced locally, suppliers should be privately-traded or cooperatively owned businesses
  • For multi-source or multi-ingredient products, 50% of ingredients should meet above criteria

Labor

Participating businesses must pay a living wage, provide equal pay for equal or equivalent work, and provide day of rest and overtime.

  • Products with the following certifications:
  • Ecocert Fair Trade Certified Fair Food Standards Council Fair Food Program (Coalition of Immokalee Workers tomatoes)
  • Fair for Life Certified by IMO
  • Fair Trade Certified by Fair Labeling Organization
  • Fair Trade Certified by Fair Trade USA Products sourced internationally must be fair trade

Sustainable

Products with the following certifications or claims:

Best:

  • Biodynamic Certified by Demeter
  • Food Alliance Certified
  • USDA Organic
  • Protected Harvest Certification
  • Rainforest Alliance Certified

Okay:

  • Fair Trade Certified by Fair Trade USA
  • Transitional Organic by OIA
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Guide “Good Alternatives”
  • Salmon Safe

Fish Only:

  • Marine Stewardship Council Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Guide “Best Choices”

Meat

Products with the following certifications or claims:

  • Animal Welfare Approved by Animal Welfare Institute
  • Biodynamic Certified
  • Global Animal Partnership
  • Certified Humane by Humane Farm Animal Care
  • Certified Organic
  • Food Alliance Certified

Ruminants Only:

  • AGA Grassfed
  • “Process Verified Grassfed” by USDA-AMD and either
  • “Never Ever 3” by USDA-FSIS
  • “Naturally Raised” by USDA-AMS

Hogs Only:

  • Certified Humane by Humane Farm Animal Care

Egg Layers Only:

  • American Humane Certified (no enriched cage eggs)
  • “Cage-Free” by USDA-AMS
